Metal Binding Proteins and Immunoglobulin Classes in the serum of Nigerian Cassava Processors

چکیده
Cassava processing is an economically viable venture in tropical Africa where cassava is consumed in various forms, but cyanogenic glycosides that are contacted during cassava processing is known to have tremendous effects on nervous system but the effect of cyanogenic glycosides on immune functions of cassava processors is largely unknown. The objective of this study is to find out if aspects of humoral immune system are affected in cassava processors. This was achieved by measuring the levels of three immunoglobulin classes (IgG, IgA and IgM) and metal binding proteins (Transferrin, Caeruloplasmin, Alpha-2Macroglobulin and Haptoglobin) in Nigerian cassava processors using principle of single radial immunodiffusion in immunoplates. The result shows that only the mean serum level of IgM was significantly increased in cassava processors compared with the controls (P=0.02). There were no significant changes in the mean levels of IgA, IgG, alpha-2 macroglobulin, caeruloplasmin and transferrin in cassava processors compared with the controls. It is the opinion of the authors that cassava processing has no tremendous adverse effect on some aspects of humoral immunity of cassava processors. [Nature and Science 2010;8(11):27-34]. The study was carried out to assess the effects of the Root and Tuber Expansion Programe (RTEP) on the livelihood of project beneficiaries in Kwara State, Nigeria. A 3-stage sampling technique was adopted for the study, selecting a total of 80 cassava processors from two Agricultural Development Programe (ADP) zones in the State. Structured interview schedule was used as instrument to elicit pr...
متن کاملBINDING OF NAPROXEN TO SERUM PROTEINS IN PATIENTS WITH LIVER CIRRHOSIS AND HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS
A three-fold decrease of the in vitro ability of serum proteins to bind naproxen was shown in patients with cirrhosis of the liver compared to healthy individuals. This decrease was caused by quantitative changes in serum proteins in the sera of patients with liver damage. Lower doses of naproxen are therefore suggested in the treatment of patients with liver dysfunction.

Background: Breast milk is important for the overall well-being of infants. Although lactation is relatively robust in the face of poor nutrition, the implication of poor nutrition on non-nutritive factors in breast milk is inconclusive. Objective: This study was designed to find associations between nutritional and immune factors in maternal blood and breast milk with the aim to improve the ne...
متن کاملSerum immunoglobulin E and immunoglobulin G reactivity to Agaricus bisporus proteins in mushroom cultivation workers
Background and Purpose: Although molds are regarded as the main fungal allergen sources, evidence indicates that spores of Basidiomycota including Agaricus bisporus (A. bisporus) can be also found at high concentrations in the environment and may cause as many respiratory allergies as molds. The aim of the present study was to evaluate specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) ...
